You can’t imagine how fundamental my parents’ curiosity about other cultures has been for me, growing up with Klezmer music and eastern european songs, trying foreign food recipes every weekend, going to the World Folk Dance Festival every year, watching documentaries… that curiosity and passion for learning other cultures and people has shaped my world vision.
Another important thing was my progessive catholic school. Our religion teacher wasn’t a priest but a theology graduate. Still catholic but with another vision…we studied world religions and watched regular movies/docs but with what he called ‘‘christian values’‘. We never learned the credo, or the angelus, barely touched the catecismo de la iglesia, but we sure knew to defend the opressed and care for our friends and people.
